Move the layers up and down in the panel by pressing and holding them with the Apple pencil and swiping up or down in the panel. Click on the “+’ to create a new layer to draw on. The layer panel in Procreate works similarly to the layer panel in Photoshop or Illustrator. Scroll through the brush library, click on the brush that you would like to use and start drawing.

You can also install new brushes that you purchase. Click on the brush to access all of the brushes that come with Procreate. The brush library is located in the upper right corner. The opacity and brush size sliders are on the side and the selection tools, and action tools are in the upper left. The brush library, layer panel and color panel are in the upper right. Once you create a new document, it will appear as a white box. To create a new document, simply click the “+” button in the upper right and choose a size.
If you’ve never created a document, this will be blank when you first open the app. The gallery is where you’ll see every design that you’ve created. To use Procreate on the iPad Pro, you’ll need an Apple Pencil. The screenshots below are from version 4. The newest version of Procreate (as of the writing of this post) is version 5. Since Procreate comes out with updates every so often, the screenshots below may not look exactly like yours. Because it is all digital, it allows you to easily delete mistakes and edit your designs. The Procreate app for the iPad Pro is an amazing drawing app that has taken my designs to the next level. In this intro to Procreate, you’ll learn the basic setup of the Procreate app, the essentials tools and how they function. You learn as you go, just keep trying.Learn how to use Procreate. Clean up those messy images quickly and get it back to the student so they aren’t behind their class. You can use the iPad camera to take a picture of the image and then trace the basics of it that allow your student to be included with their class on an activity. Essentially, you are tracing whatever the image is. Layers, layers, layers, when in doubt… create a new layer. I have just recently been working with this, but I have seen some other things artists have done with procreate and I think there are other things we can find to use this app for. The most important thing to remember is that you HAVE to work in layers. Procreate is a paid app, and it does have a learning curve. So now that you’re totally interested, I will say. It is also a way to have things to work with that are of high interest to students. I feel like this time saver is a way that we can continue to move into spending more time with our students. I can also change settings to make the colors what any of my students need. I was able to print them and make sure they were accessible then after a couple doubtful seconds I was surprised to see that the lines were nice and clean, and IT WORKED! I have since created my own images to use with other students that help to engage their interest in the activity we are doing. I saved so much time adapting the images on my iPad.
But with Procreate, my iPad pro, and my trust apple pencil I was able to “trace the images”. I looked at the themed worksheets and thought, “Man, these are not going to work for _”. I was able to adapt not only the image the colleague emailed me but also the themed worksheets that I had been given by another teacher.
Then I thought back to an app I had personally purchased for when I feel creative.
